UK deploys warship to Middle East in preparation for potential Strait of Hormuz mission

(SeaPRwire) –   The United Kingdom is sending one of its warships to the Middle East as part of preparations for a European-led mission to escort vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, but only once a lasting ceasefire or peace agreement has been reached.

HMS Dragon, a Type-45 warship equipped with guided missile defense capabilities, is expected to be included in the UK’s contribution to this defensive naval operation. The mission aims to reassure commercial ships navigating the strategic waterway, and it will not commence until there is a stable ceasefire in place.

“The pre-positioning of HMS Dragon reflects prudent planning to ensure the UK remains ready—alongside a multinational coalition jointly led by the UK and France—to secure the Strait when conditions permit,” stated a spokesperson from the UK Ministry of Defence.

This development follows ongoing efforts to end the 10-week conflict, as Iran considers a new U.S. proposal aimed at bringing an end to the fighting. HMS Dragon recently completed weapons system tests off the coast of Crete and was initially deployed to support Cyprus at the outbreak of hostilities.

Over 40 nations are involved in coordinating plans for the UK-France military initiative, with another planning meeting scheduled for next week. Several participating countries are anticipated to contribute capabilities such as mine clearance, vessel escorts, and air policing.

France recently announced that its aircraft carrier, Charles de Gaulle, has been repositioned in the Red Sea. This move signals the coalition’s readiness to safeguard the Strait of Hormuz.

US Awaits Iranian Response After Hormuz Clashes Strain Ceasefire

Since the conflict began with U.S. and Israeli strikes in late February, Iran has effectively blocked access to the Strait of Hormuz, which handles approximately one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. In response, the U.S. has established a naval blockade in the region.

Despite the existence of a ceasefire between the two sides, recent clashes have occurred in the strait. On Friday, U.S. forces conducted airstrikes on two empty Iranian oil tankers attempting to breach the blockade and enter an Iranian port, according to the U.S. Central Command.
