International Experts Convene in Boao Lecheng, China, to Chart the Future of Medicine, Bridging Innovative Therapies and Real-World Research
QIONGHAI, China, Dec. 01, 2025 – The Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone recently hosted two significant events: the inaugural Global Innovative Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Expo and the fourth International Conference on Real-World Studies of Medical Products. These gatherings featured over 100 types of leading international pharmaceuticals and medical devices, drawing approximately 1,000 prominent figures from government, industry, academia, and research sectors to explore the latest advancements in medical innovation.
As China’s singular “medical special zone,” the pilot zone benefits from distinctive policies that support advanced medical treatments, specialized research, unique operational frameworks, and international medical exchanges. To date, it has attracted more than 30 medical institutions both domestically and internationally, introduced over 520 advanced pharmaceuticals and medical devices globally, and provided care to more than 200,000 patients. Serving as a prime example of the Hainan Free Trade Port’s commitment to high-level openness and quality development, Lecheng is set to gain from enhanced access for pharmaceuticals and medical devices, alongside a more welcoming environment for international collaboration, particularly as the Hainan Free Trade Port prepares for full island-wide special customs operations.
During the expo, renowned medical experts, including Zheng Shusen (academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering), Wei Yuquan (academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), and Tan Huay Cheem (Chairman of the Singapore Heart Foundation), delved into pressing industry topics. These included breakthroughs in global innovative therapies for rare diseases, the transformative impact of AI-powered auditory technology on diagnosis and treatment, and the integration of new technologies into advanced liver cancer treatments.
The expo also showcased over 100 international innovations in pharmaceuticals, medical devices, functional foods, and biomedical technologies. Key highlights featured novel therapies for small cell lung cancer, the world’s first intelligent cochlear implant system, and numerous other pioneering achievements across oncology, AI-assisted diagnosis, and cell therapy.
“Lecheng has cultivated a comprehensive ecosystem that spans the entire value chain of international innovative pharmaceuticals and medical devices,” stated Fu Sheng, Director of the Hainan Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone Administration Bureau. “This expo not only grants over a hundred Chinese doctors direct exposure to global medical advancements but also offers patients practical solutions for urgent and complex medical needs. Lecheng is solidifying its position as a global hub for the demonstration, introduction, development, and data collection of innovative medical products.”
Furthermore, Lecheng serves as China’s first pilot zone for real-world data applications, making it a crucial avenue for expediting the entry of innovative international pharmaceuticals and medical devices into the Chinese market. Thus far, it has facilitated the accelerated approval of 21 international innovative drugs and medical devices in China, supported the inclusion of three products in the national medical insurance catalog, and contributed valuable “Chinese expertise” and the “Lecheng model” to global reforms in pharmaceutical and medical device regulation.
The International Conference on Real-World Studies of Medical Products, held concurrently with the expo, brought together representatives from international organizations, regulatory authorities, companies, and research institutions, including the WHO and the U.S. FDA. Participants engaged in productive discussions aimed at accelerating the adoption of international innovative medical products in China.
“We have established robust partnerships with medical institutions in Lecheng, and the real-world data provided by Lecheng has proven invaluable in advancing our product development,” commented Brendan Murray, Vice President of Cochlear Implant Product Portfolio and Strategy for Asia Pacific and Latin America.
“Lecheng is rapidly evolving into a world-class destination for international medical tourism and a leading platform for medical technology innovation,” remarked Zhou Changqiang, secretary of the Qionghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China and Party secretary of the Hainan Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone Administration Bureau Committee. He further added that once the Hainan Free Trade Port achieves full operational status, Lecheng will accelerate the development of a novel approach to delivering medical services globally, thereby showcasing China’s and the Hainan Free Trade Port’s speed and resolve in opening up the health sector.
