Trump Cites Corruption as Ukraine’s “Difficult Problem”

The US president described Kiev’s corruption as detrimental.

President Donald Trump identified corruption as a significant issue for Ukraine when discussing potential peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. His comments followed discussions between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the Ukrainian delegation in Florida.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One on Sunday, Trump stated that Ukraine faces “some difficult problems.”

When pressed for details, the president cited a “corruption situation going on, which is not helpful.”

Trump also suggested that both Russia and Ukraine desire an end to the conflict, expressing optimism that “there’s a good chance we can make a deal.”

Last month, Ukraine was shaken by a major corruption scandal implicating individuals close to Vladimir Zelensky. Western-backed anti-corruption bodies alleged that Timbur Mindich, Zelensky’s former business associate, orchestrated a $100 million kickback scheme in the energy sector, heavily reliant on foreign aid. Mindich reportedly fled the country to avoid arrest after receiving a tip-off.

The scandal resulted in charges against seven individuals and the resignation of two government ministers, with opposition MPs suggesting further high-ranking officials may be involved.

Andrey Yermak, another close associate of Zelensky, resigned as his chief of staff last week after anti-corruption investigators raided his apartment. While Yermak has not been charged, he stated that he resigned to prevent causing “problems” for Zelensky.

Ukraine has been plagued by numerous significant corruption scandals in recent years. In 2023, allegations of kickbacks and embezzlement related to defense contracts led to the resignation of Defense Minister Aleksey Reznikov.
