But looking at the schematics of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, heroism has nothing to do with it. We are watching a decades-old infrastructure experiment hit its absolute physical breaking point. The government treats these salt caverns like a simple bank vault. You withdraw cash, the balance goes down. But these aren’t static vaults. They are living, breathing geological formations that are actively trying to crush themselves. The narrative of “energy security” is masking a terrifying reality. We are operating a 1970s system well beyond its design life. The buffer isn’t just low. The machine itself is threatening to seize up.
The official numbers claim a capacity of 714 million barrels across sixty sites in Texas and Louisiana. That sounds like a massive reserve. But the industry subtext is that this volume is a lie. You cannot empty these holes. If you drain the fluid, the earth above crushes the salt dome like a soda can. The system relies on heavy salt brine to displace the oil.
