The Oscars’ James Bond Tribute: What Was So Odd About It?

Stay tuned for live updates on the winners, surprises, and key moments from the .

For those unaware, the Broccoli family, long-time guardians of the James Bond film series, recently ceded creative control to Amazon in exchange for a substantial sum. Consequently, the Oscars chose to honor the Broccolis, following Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson’s Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in November, with a 007 tribute. The tribute was… unconventional.

Despite being introduced by former Bond Girl Halle Berry, the musical performance featured artists with no prior connection to the franchise, including Margaret Qualley, Lisa from Blackpink (also of ), Doja Cat, and Raye. These three are currently promoting their new single, “Born Again.” Lisa performed “Live and Let Die,” Doja Cat shone with her version of “Diamonds Are Forever,” and Raye sang “Skyfall.” It appeared that Daniel Craig (who has been on the awards circuit for his role in Queer), Paul McCartney (a musical guest at a recent event), and Adele (an Oscar winner for “Skyfall”) all declined to participate. Instead of inviting someone with a history in the Bond franchise, the show assembled a rather peculiar lineup.

The tribute felt ominous for the franchise, with many in Hollywood worrying that it will suffer now that a tech giant is involved. The Broccolis have historically avoided Bond spinoffs or TV series to protect the integrity of the story. Amazon, however, is known for heavily exploiting IP like . The Broccolis also took chances with casting, notably Daniel Craig, who was initially controversial (due to his blonde hair) before impressing audiences in Casino Royale and Skyfall. In contrast, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos recently for fan input on the next Bond.

Tension seems to exist between Amazon and the guardians of 007. Amazon’s $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM in 2022 included a vast library of films and the rights to Bond, a highly successful franchise. Since then, the search for a new Bond has stalled. Daniel Craig’s character was (spoiler alert) killed off in his last 007 film, , creating an opportunity for a new, young actor. Reportedly, disagreements between the Broccolis and Amazon’s creative team over the franchise’s direction have prevented a clear frontrunner from emerging.

A writer and director for the next Bond film have also not been announced. The Broccolis are known for protecting the character, avoiding modern updates or excessive franchise connectivity. They also deny filmmakers final cut, preventing directors like Christopher Nolan, who a Bond film after Tenet, from participating.

Now, Amazon must find both a new creative team and a new star. The future direction of 007 remains uncertain. But that Oscars tribute left us both shaken and stirred.
