Tesla Recalls 27,000 Cybertrucks Due to Rearview Camera Delay

Tesla has issued a recall for its Cybertrucks, marking the fifth recall for the model since its release last year. Approximately 27,000 Cybertrucks are affected. The recall is due to a delay in the rearview image display on the dashboard, which could potentially increase the risk of a collision, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) notice filed on Sept. 26.

On the affected Cybertrucks, the rearview camera display might remain blank for up to 6-8 seconds after shifting into reverse. However, current regulations mandate that vehicles should display the rearview image within 2 seconds of engaging reverse gear.

The recall specifically affects certain Cybertrucks manufactured between Nov. 13, 2023, and Sept. 14, 2024. Tesla states that drivers of affected Cybertrucks can still reverse safely by using their mirrors and performing other maneuvers.

The recall filing explains that the issue was identified during a September internal compliance audit. Following this discovery, Tesla investigated the condition, conducted tests, and initiated a voluntary recall. As of the date preceding the filing, Tesla reported identifying 45 warranty claims and four field reports potentially related to the rearview camera issue. However, the company is reportedly unaware of any accidents caused by this problem.

Tesla has provided a tool on its website for customers to check if their vehicle is affected by this recall. The company has also announced that the issue will be resolved through a software update, eliminating the need for service appointments.

TIME has contacted Tesla for comment.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has not yet commented on this Cybertruck recall, although he previously described the vehicles as “pretty awesome.” This is the latest in a series of recalls affecting Tesla vehicles over the past year. In January, the company recalled several models, including Cybertrucks, due to illegible warning light lettering. This issue was ultimately addressed through a software update, but the problems did not end there.

In April, Tesla recalled Cybertrucks manufactured between Nov. 13, 2023, to April 4, 2024, due to faulty accelerator pedals. In May, Tesla issued a recall for a seat belt signal issue. And in June, another recall was issued regarding a potential issue with a windshield wiper piece detaching while driving.
