Shirley Chisholm’s Enduring Influence
As the first Black woman in Congress and a candidate for the Democratic Party’s Presidential nomination, Shirley Chisholm’s vision was undeniably significant. However, even she might not have foreseen the events of her centennial year. This year marks the first time a woman of color has headed a major party ticket. Since her passing in 2005, Chisholm has been the subject of a documentary and numerous biographies. The New York City Council has designated November 30th as annual Shirley Chisholm Day. Despite this, her influence hasn’t always received the same recognition as other prominent Black leaders.
A short documentary explores Chisholm’s lasting impact and her inspiration to many, even as the prospect of a female President remains elusive in the United States.
