‘Ocean Dream’ Diamond, the World’s Largest Blue-Green Stone of Its Kind, Fetches $17.3 Million

(SeaPRwire) –   A 5.5-carat triangular-cut diamond, recognized as the largest known fancy vivid blue-green stone, fetched over 13.5 million Swiss francs ($17.3 million) on Wednesday, according to Christie’s, setting a new auction record for this type of gem.

The “Ocean Dream,” which was the highlight of Christie’s Geneva jewelry sale, was discovered in Central Africa during the 1990s. The final price far exceeded its pre-auction estimate of 7 to 10 million francs (approximately $9 to $13 million).

Rahul Kadakia, president of Christie’s Asia Pacific, confirmed that an undisclosed private client acquired the diamond, and it took around 20 minutes to sell—signaling strong buyer interest.

The sale price surpassed the previous record for the same gem by more than double; it had sold for about $8.5 million at Christie’s in 2014 when featured among rare colored diamonds at the Smithsonian Splendour of Diamonds Exhibition in 2003.

“A stellar result worthy of the world’s rarest blue-green diamond,” commented Tobias Kormind, managing director of online jeweler 77 Diamonds, in a statement.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, a 6-carat fancy vivid blue diamond offered at Sotheby’s Geneva auction failed to find a buyer.

The auction house noted that the rare stone, mined from South Africa’s renowned Cullinan mine, carried a pre-sale estimate of 7.2 to 9.6 million francs ($9.2 million to $12.3 million).

“Although the diamond did not sell at auction, we are currently engaged in discussions with several interested parties and remain confident it will soon find a new owner,” Sotheby’s stated.

Both auction houses observe a growing collector demand for rare colored diamonds, a category that represents only a tiny fraction of all diamonds extracted globally.
