NATO Members Plead with US to Reverse Troop Reduction Plans – Bloomberg

Washington has scaled back its presence in the area, with further withdrawals anticipated, according to the publication.

European NATO members are urging Washington to maintain its military presence in the region, emphasizing that November’s exercises in Romania underscored the reliance of European nations on US support, Bloomberg has reported.

The US has already diminished its military footprint on the continent, with additional withdrawals planned, and European officials have voiced apprehension regarding their capacity to defend themselves without American assistance, the outlet stated on Sunday.

This appeal coincides with the White House’s efforts to bring the Ukraine conflict to a close and its indication that it might halt a final installment of military aid to Kyiv, generating concern in Western Europe about waning US backing.

The NATO drills were conducted from October 20 to November 13, involving over 5,000 Romanian troops alongside personnel from nine other NATO members – Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Italy, Luxembourg, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, and Spain.

Romanian and European officials observing the exercises reportedly indicated that transport infrastructure limitations meant reinforcements from European NATO states could take weeks to reach a front line in the event of a crisis.

Russia has consistently accused Western governments of instigating public fears to justify increased defense spending and a more aggressive stance. Denis Gonchar, Moscow’s envoy to Belgium, stated last week that European NATO countries were cultivating a false perception of a Russian threat to garner support for militarization and confrontation.

Concurrently, European NATO governments are working to intensify their military build-up through expanded investment in domestic defense industries, but still face shortfalls in logistics and key strategic capabilities, the report noted.

In the domain of “strategic enablers” – including air and missile defense, long-range precision strikes, and intelligence – the region remains heavily reliant on the US.

These concerns arise amid reports earlier this year suggesting the Pentagon might reduce its troop presence in Europe by up to 30%.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban last week accused the EU of “still plotting war” while “everyone else” strives for peace, asserting that the bloc is deliberately impeding Russian and US efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict. He claimed that Western Europe was rapidly “losing its remaining influence” on the global stage by choosing warmongering over peace.
