Meet Joe McCann: The High-Flying Crypto Trader Detained in Tanzania After His Influencer Fiancée Ashly Robinson’s Sudden Death

(SeaPRwire) – Joe McCann entered the crypto trading world and, within two years, appeared to have achieved significant success. McCann’s fund, Asymmetric, secured investments in 2022 from notable figures like Marc Andreessen and Circle. During the crypto boom coinciding with Donald Trump’s presidency, the fund’s value nearly doubled. However, the situation subsequently deteriorated.
By July 2025, Asymmetric’s liquid fund had experienced substantial losses, prompting McCann to redirect investors into a new, unsuccessful venture. More recently, reports surfaced this month detailing the death of McCann’s fiancée, influencer Ashly Robinson, while on vacation with McCann at a high-end resort in Tanzania. Initially, Robinson’s death was attributed to suicide, but authorities have reportedly confiscated McCann’s passport and are questioning him as part of an ongoing inquiry.
McCann and a young influencer
According to one of her Instagram posts, Robinson, who is known online as Ashlee Jenae, began a relationship with McCann in November 2024, a period when McCann’s crypto firm was at its peak. McCann, who did not respond to multiple text messages seeking comment, was previously married in 2018 to Shea Jackson, who was ten years his junior and worked in marketing. The couple eventually separated, and two founders who received venture funding from Asymmetric’s venture fund informed the publication that some of McCann’s stake had been transferred to Jackson. Jackson did not respond to a request for comment. McCann also has a daughter, as indicated by his posts on X.
McCann started bringing Robinson, who was 15 years his junior, to crypto events, and she began sharing photos of him on her social media platforms. Robinson’s online profiles depict her and McCann traveling to various exotic destinations as she embraced the “soft life,” a social media trend focused on self-care. Her final Instagram post, showing her feeding a giraffe in Tanzania, was captioned, “Chapter 31 and I’m exactly where i need to be.” Two days prior, the 30-year-old had shared a video of McCann, 45, proposing to her with a lion visible in the background.
Local police reports indicate that the couple checked into the luxury Zuri Zanzibar hotel on April 6. Following an argument, hotel staff reportedly moved McCann to a separate room from Robinson’s. On April 8, a room service attendant discovered Robinson unconscious in her room and she was transported to the hospital. Tanzanian police have stated that her death was due to suicide.
McCann, who has not been formally charged with any offense, has had his passport retained by local authorities and is being questioned by the police, according to the police report. Robinson’s family has described her death as suspicious in a statement.
A crack-up at McCann’s crypto firm
Joe McCann built his career by operating on his own terms.
Born in 1980, McCann attended Portland State University, where he studied philosophy, with a particular interest in Nietzsche and Schopenhauer. He spent over a decade in the tech and finance sectors, eventually becoming CEO of a software company that was acquired in 2019. After a period at Microsoft, McCann once again assumed the role of CEO after launching a crypto fund, telling himself he would approach it “a little bit different this time,” according to a 2024 podcast interview.
McCann aimed to present Asymmetric, which comprised both venture and liquid arms, as financially prudent yet culturally vibrant. In a podcast interview, McCann described his background as a DJ who organized raves and managed record labels, and who, with his brother, ran a clothing line, and had been CTO at a leading New York City advertising agency before founding Asymmetric. He suggested that his exposure to the “creative side of humanity” provided an advantage in crypto investing.
In interviews, McCann boasted about achieving substantial returns on a highly speculative memecoin called BONK. He enhanced his cultural appeal by associating with rapper Iggy Azalea and promoting that artist’s unsuccessful crypto project. He briefly marketed an Asymmetric-branded merchandise line, complete with a high-production promotional video.
For a period, these efforts translated into strong financial results. In 2024, the value of Asymmetric’s liquid portfolio grew from approximately $195 million to $395 million, according to a source familiar with the firm’s finances. However, Asymmetric’s returns still lagged behind Bitcoin’s 121% gain that year.
Despite the significant returns, internal dissatisfaction existed within Asymmetric. Chris Cecere, a founding member and key trader, departed the firm despite Asymmetric’s strong performance in 2024, according to an individual who spoke with Cecere. Cecere did not respond to a request for comment.
As Asymmetric began to face difficulties in 2025, McCann turned his attention to a crypto trend known as digital asset treasury companies, popularized by Michael Saylor’s strategy, formerly associated with Microstrategy. In a July statement, he informed investors that due to “shifting market dynamics,” Asymmetric would abandon its active trading strategy and allocate its remaining capital to building a treasury of the cryptocurrency Solana.
Investors were invited to an informational session for Accelerate on July 22. However, on the same day, a disgruntled limited partner posted the firm’s year-to-date loss of nearly 80% on X. Shortly thereafter, the Solana initiative was abandoned. One former Asymmetric LP stated that as the liquid fund was being dissolved, the return they received was less than their initial investment. Currently, Asymmetric’s website lists two venture funds and a special purpose vehicle for Circle equity. The “Team” section of Asymmetric’s website has been removed, and an Asymmetric general partner did not respond to a request for comment.
Even as Asymmetric struggled, McCann remained active in the crypto community, frequently posting multiple times a day to his over 100,000 followers on X. In March of this year, the crypto firm MG Stover acquired Asymmetric Information, a crypto analytics firm founded by McCann.
However, following his problematic trip to Tanzania, McCann’s challenges have escalated beyond his crypto ventures. The family of McCann’s deceased fiancée is seeking answers regarding her death, and McCann is currently unable to leave Tanzania.
In a podcast appearance during Joe McCann’s highly successful year in 2024, the head of Asymmetric discussed a critical risk that all traders must manage: the risk of complete loss.
McCann stated, “Seeking asymmetry—meaning, asymmetric upside with limited to no downside—must be accompanied by avoiding the risk of ruin.”
