MacKenzie Scott Has Donated Over $26 Billion—But Amazon Shares’ Power Means It’s Barely Dented Her Net Worth

(SeaPRwire) –   MacKenzie Scott has established herself as a leading figure in global philanthropy. The billionaire author and former wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has distributed a remarkable $26 billion since 2019.

Scott acquired much of her wealth through her marriage to Bezos, which ended in 2019. During Amazon’s early years, she was deeply involved in its creation and operations, contributing to business strategies and legal documentation. Following their separation, she was awarded approximately a 4% stake in the company.

In the years since, she has reduced her holdings by roughly 42%, selling or donating about 58 million shares with a valuation of nearly $12.6 billion as of late 2025. Her current net worth stands at $42.7 billion, even after giving away more than $26 billion through Yield Giving, the philanthropic platform she launched in 2022. Her organization has supported thousands of groups, with a focus on education, disaster relief, and DEI initiatives.

Despite her ongoing divestment from Amazon, Scott’s fortune continues to increase. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, her net worth has grown by $2.35 billion this year. Since April 2021, the price of Amazon stock has climbed by more than 47%.

In 2020, Bezos made the year’s most significant charitable contribution—a $10 billion gift to establish the Bezos Earth Fund for climate change mitigation. To date, he and his wife, Lauren Sánchez Bezos, have distributed approximately $2.3 billion to environmental organizations through that fund and $850 million via the Day 1 Families Fund. Additionally, in 2024, he fulfilled a $200 million commitment to the Smithsonian for facility renovations and a new educational center.

However, his total lifetime contributions amount to only $4.7 billion, according to the Forbes 2025 list of America’s Most Generous Philanthropists. Given his $270 billion net worth, this represents just 1.7% of his wealth, whereas Scott has donated roughly 40% of her total assets.

It should be noted that Forbes defines “lifetime giving” as money that has been fully distributed, excluding funds currently held in foundations. This ranking places Scott as the third most generous philanthropist, following Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, and Melinda French Gates.

Significant donations from MacKenzie Scott in 2025

Over the span of just a few months, Scott has contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to groups focused on education, disaster recovery, and DEI. Some of her most notable recent gifts include:

  • Howard University: $80 million (including $63 million for the university and $17 million for its College of Medicine; among the largest single gifts in the school’s history)
  • Virginia State University: $50 million (the most significant donation the university has ever received)
  • Alcorn State University: $42 million (the largest single contribution in the institution’s 154-year history)
  • Spelman College: $38 million (one of the most substantial gifts in Spelman’s history)
  • United Negro College Fund (UNCF): $70 million (allocated to the Pooled Endowment Fund to aid the financial stability of 37 member HBCUs)
  • African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund: $40 million (doubling the amount of her previous 2021 donation to the group)
  • Center for Disaster Philanthropy: $60 million (addressing needs after the Trump administration halted or suspended major disaster relief grant programs)

The philanthropic approach of MacKenzie Scott

Scott’s method of giving is considered distinctive because she provides unrestricted grants, allowing organizations to determine the best use for the funds. However, this same approach led to her being left off a major list of top donors this year. Although she distributed over $7 billion to more than 120 groups last year via Yield Giving, the Chronicle did not include her in its annual Philanthropy 50 list.

“MacKenzie Scott is a notable omission from the Philanthropy 50,” the Chronicle stated. “While she may have contributed to donor-advised funds that would have qualified her for the list, she and her team declined to share that data with the Chronicle.”

Despite her preference for privacy, her style is highly regarded by the organizations she supports.

“In contrast to traditional funding models that require extensive applications and strict reporting, her approach trusts organizations like ours to quickly and creatively use funds to solve urgent problems,” Noni Ramos, CEO of Housing Trust Silicon Valley, remarked in late 2024 after receiving a $30 million gift from Scott.

Scott has recently prioritized DEI, education, and disaster relief—three sectors that have seen significant federal funding cuts under the Trump administration. This suggests her philanthropic efforts may be aimed at bridging the gap left by government policy.

She maintains that citizens should “recognize and celebrate our role as active participants in the co-creation of our communities,” as she noted in a December 9 update on her Yield Giving website.

“The power of peaceful, non-transactional giving has often been undervalued because it isn’t financially self-sustaining or its results are difficult to measure,” she wrote. “But what if these perceived flaws are actually the very strengths that the survival and success of our society depend upon?”
