Former President Jimmy Carter’s state funeral will be held on January 9th in Washington, D.C., following several days of tributes and ceremonies.

President Biden declared January 9th a National Day of Mourning, ordering federal government closure to honor the former President, who passed away on December 29th at age 100. However, events begin earlier, on January 4th, with a motorcade through Carter’s hometown of Plains, Georgia.

Here’s a summary of the planned events honoring the former President.

Pre-Funeral Events:

On January 4th, a motorcade will travel through Plains, pausing briefly at Carter’s childhood home. The National Park Service will perform a salute and toll a historic farm bell 39 times. The motorcade will proceed to Atlanta, stopping at the Georgia State Capitol for a moment of silence led by Governor Kemp and other officials. A private service will follow at the Carter Presidential Center, where the former President will lie in repose until 6 a.m. on January 7th, allowing public visitation.

On January 7th, Carter will be transported to the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C., for a procession to the U.S. Capitol. A service will be held in the Capitol Rotunda, affording Congress the opportunity to pay their respects. Afterward, the former President will lie in state, open to the public that evening, until the morning of January 9th.

Funeral Day Events:

On January 9th, a motorcade will convey Carter from the U.S. Capitol to Washington National Cathedral for the national funeral service (10-11 a.m. ET). While specifics of the service were not detailed in the military task force’s schedule, President Biden confirmed he’ll deliver a eulogy, as requested by Carter.

Following the service, Carter will be flown back to Georgia for a private funeral at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains—the same church where his wife, Rosalynn, was laid to rest in November 2023, and where he taught Sunday school.

A final motorcade will then take the former President through Plains before a private interment beside his wife. A U.S. Navy missing man formation flyover will precede the interment.

Attendees:

President Biden will be in attendance, along with other anticipated former presidents and first ladies. President-elect Trump announced his intention to attend on Tuesday.
