Guano, Geopolitics, and the Eternal Scramble for Soil’s Life Support

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz proves once again that modern civilizations rest on fragile nutritional lifelines rather than digital abstractions. Roughly one-third of the world’s fertilizer normally passes through this narrow maritime chokepoint, making access to crop nutrients just as strategically vital as access to crude oil. Yet contemporary policymakers acting surprised by these supply shocks ignore a long, brutal history of agricultural vulnerability. Long before synthetic ammonia transformed farming in the 20th century, global empires fought tooth and nail over an entirely different kind of strategic commodity: dried seabird excrement.

Historical analysis shows that nineteenth-century agriculture relied heavily on seabird guano shipped from remote Pacific and Caribbean islands to farms across Europe and North America. Rich in nitrogen and phosphorus, this natural fertilizer emerged as the first commodity traded on a truly global scale to rescue depleted soils from industrial exhaustion. Alexander von Humboldt brought Peruvian coastal guano samples to Europe in 1804, and commercial interest surged in the 1840s after agricultural chemists like Justus von Liebig proved that crop growth required replacing nutrients stripped away by urban-driven food extraction.

At the same time, this global nutrient transfer carried immense human and geopolitical costs. Centuries of accumulated guano on Peru’s Chincha Islands formed dense, cementlike masses that required backbreaking physical labor with picks and crowbars. As the Atlantic slave trade ended, employers turned to debt peonage and the brutal coolie trade, forcing thousands of Chinese indentured laborers to work under unforgiving suns while breathing caustic clouds of ammonia-laden dust. Governments quickly recognized the stakes, leading the United States Congress to pass the Guano Islands Act of 1856 under President Millard Fillmore to authorize citizens to claim unoccupied islands and secure fertilizer supplies.

Today’s geopolitical gridlock over natural gas markets, nitrogen fertilizers, potash sanctions on Belarus, and Chinese phosphate export restrictions simply mirrors nineteenth-century resource nationalism. The underlying mechanics of feeding industrial populations have always demanded territorial expansion, overseas exploitation, and ironclad control over chokepoints. When sovereign states scramble to secure fertilizer supply chains, they are merely rehearsing an old imperial playbook written on barren islands filled with bird droppings.
