George Foreman Interred in Sioux City; Family Notes He Always Recalled His Only Visit There Nearly 40 Years Ago

(SeaPRwire) – The legendary boxing champion George Foreman has been interred in a cemetery in northwestern Iowa—a location with which he had no ties other than a single visit nearly forty years ago.
Foreman passed away in Houston on March 21, 2025, at the age of 76, and was buried at Logan Park Cemetery in Sioux City a month later, as confirmed by local officials. His family returned to the gravesite on Thursday, joining Sioux City Mayor Bob Scott for a press conference to unveil a large memorial featuring an image of Foreman as a teenager following his Olympic gold medal win.
In a statement provided by the city, the family noted that Foreman had visited Sioux City in 1988 and frequently spoke of the tranquility he found there.
After visiting the city on April 17 of the previous year for the burial, his relatives stated they immediately recognized why the area meant so much to him.
“Our father’s life was one of faith, purpose, and gratitude,” the family expressed in the city-issued statement. “It means a great deal to us to see him resting in a place where he felt such peace.”
Mayor Scott stood with the family at the monument, located just north of the Missouri River in the city of nearly 87,000. The cemetery overlooks the Loess Hills, which consist of wind-deposited silt reaching heights of 200 feet (about 61 meters) and stretching 200 miles (322 kilometers) along the Iowa border.
“Their account serves as a reminder of how a specific place can resonate with someone throughout their entire life,” Scott remarked.
A Texas native, Foreman first gained international fame as a member of the 1968 U.S. Olympic boxing team, where he took home the gold in Mexico City. He secured the world heavyweight title in 1973 by defeating Joe Frazier, though he lost the championship to Muhammad Ali a year later in the iconic “Rumble in the Jungle.”
Two decades later, in 1994, Foreman became the oldest person to claim the heavyweight title at age 45, pulling off a historic upset against Michael Moorer.
Foreman officially retired from the sport in 1997, finishing with a career record of 76-5.
He then transitioned into a career as a businessman, actor, and spokesperson, becoming a household name for a new generation as the face of the George Foreman Grill. The cooking device sold over 100 million units, earning him more wealth than his professional boxing career.
A film based on Foreman’s life was released in theaters in 2023.
