Roblox Is Bleeding, and the Market Finally Noticed

The stock price is a lagging indicator of reality, but the cash flow leading to it is the truth. Jefferies just pulled the rug out from under Roblox by downgrading it to Underperform. The price target sits at $38. That is an 18% haircut from Friday’s close of $46.44. The street sees a 30% rally since Q2 earnings as a mistake. James Heaney at Jefferies calls this optimism dangerous. He argues the market has priced in a booking growth curve that does not exist yet. The “party” is over for those holding bag hope. The data shows why the bulls are losing ground.

Let’s look at the hard numbers before the narrative. Daily active users spiked to 26 million in Q3 2025. That was a jump from roughly 20 million in early 2025. The driver? Viral hits like “Grow a Garden” and “Steal a Brainrot.” Jefferies notes these users churned out quickly. They were not a stickier user base. The new content algorithm favors long-term retention. This shift slows short-term user growth. The platform needs to prove it can pull in more users over 18. Until then, the user base cap remains at roughly 25 million daily actives. It is a ceiling, not a floor.

Then there is the revenue side. Q2 total bookings hit $1.57 billion. That is an 8% rise. But it landed at the low end of guidance. The range was $1.55 to $1.61 billion. Look ahead to Q3. Guidance points to $1.58 to $1.65 billion. That projects a decline of 14% to 18%. Margins will get squeezed. Heaney compares this to Meta between 2017 and 2019. Meta spent heavily on trust and safety while revenue growth stalled. Roblox is in “investment mode” now. Spending goes up. Growth slows. The gap between cost and revenue widens. This is where shareholder value erodes. Wall Street is split, with Morgan Stanley at Overweight and a $55 target. The average is $49.34. But Jefferies sees the trap. The algorithmic shift hurts short-term volume. New viral titles like “Steal an Egg” are not bringing fresh audiences. They are recycling the same users. The supply side is tight. The demand side is cooling.

Supply chain integrity fails when input costs rise while output volume stagnates. Roblox is spending more to retain fewer new users. The algorithm is a filter, not a faucet. It removes low-quality engagement. It also removes the viral spikes that kept DAUs high. The result is a plateau. Heaney sees a margin squeeze similar to Meta’s pre-metaverse era. The platform is burning cash to maintain relevance. The cash flow is not keeping up. The market is correcting. The 43% year-to-date decline is not a dip. It is a re-rating of the entire growth model. The hardware of the platform is the code. The supply of new games is not matching the demand for sustainable revenue. The endgame is a lower margin profile. That is the physical reality of the business.
