Moderna (MRNA) surged 8.5% to approximately $58.99 in Monday’s premarket trading, extending gains that began Friday when the stock climbed 12%. The stock has now risen about 161% since its 52-week closing low of $22.26 in November 2025.

The catalyst was a positive test result for the Andes strain of hantavirus in a U.S. citizen aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship. This rare rodent-borne respiratory virus is unique among hantaviruses for its ability to transmit from person to person.

The Department of Health and Human Services announced that all 17 American passengers from the ship are being repatriated to the United States. Two individuals are traveling under biocontainment on the return flight—one tested mildly positive and the other is experiencing mild symptoms.

Moderna acknowledged its involvement in hantavirus research in a statement to CNBC. The company noted that it has conducted preclinical studies on hantaviruses in partnership with USAMRIID, describing the work as “early-stage and ongoing” and part of a broader commitment to developing countermeasures against emerging infectious diseases.

Analysts Push Back on the Rally

Evercore ISI expressed skepticism in a note published May 7. Analysts stated that Moderna “tends to trade on outbreak headlines well beyond the underlying commercial implications,” and they see “no meaningful revenue opportunity” from hantavirus.

“Hantavirus is a low-incidence, structurally small market,” Evercore wrote. “We view any potential outsized moves as sentiment-driven, not fundamental.”

The broader biotech sector also moved. Inovio Pharmaceuticals (INO) rose 13% in early trading. Novavax (NVAX) gained about 3%, and Emergent Biosolutions (EBS) advanced roughly 4%.

The WHO issued an alert on May 2 regarding the outbreak linked to the Dutch-flagged expedition vessel sailing in the Atlantic. WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported a total of eight cases, with five confirmed as hantavirus and three resulting in death. The organization maintains the public health risk remains low.

What We Know About the Outbreak

President Trump addressed the situation Thursday, stating the cruise ship outbreak is “very much under control” and that a comprehensive report would follow shortly.

The MV Hondius has docked in Tenerife, Spain’s Canary Islands. Passengers and crew have disembarked following strict health protocols, including coordinated testing, isolation procedures, and repatriation efforts across multiple nations.

Health officials continue to emphasize that human-to-human transmission of the Andes strain is uncommon and that the risk of a wider outbreak remains minimal.
