Bitcoin’s $0.02 Display Sparks Trading Confusion at Revolut

TLDR

  • Revolut briefly listed Bitcoin at $0.02, while major exchanges reported BTC around $79,000–$80,000.
  • The glitch lasted only minutes, occurring between 7:45 and 7:50 GMT+1 on Thursday morning.
  • Revolut attributed the error to a disruption from a third-party data provider.
  • No trades, user balances, or customer funds were impacted.
  • The incident followed Revolut’s recent receipt of its full UK banking license.

(SeaPRwire) –   Revolut, the fintech application serving more than 70 million users globally, briefly displayed Bitcoin trading at $0.02 on Thursday morning. The actual market price at the time ranged from about $79,000 to $80,000. The error persisted only minutes but spread rapidly on social media after push notifications were sent to users.

Screenshots shared on X displayed a Revolut alert stating: “BTC reaches a 52-week low. The price of BTC has dropped to $0.02.” That notice concerned some users, while others found it humorous.

“BTC ‘crashed’ to $0.02 on Revolut. For 3 seconds, I thought I was about to buy the entire supply and become Satoshi’s final boss,” one user posted on X.

The glitch occurred between 7:45 and 7:50 GMT+1, according to user reports. During that window, Bitcoin continued normal trading on Coinbase, CoinGecko, and CoinMarketCap, with no price disruption evident on any major exchange.

Revolut confirmed the issue originated from a third-party service provider. A spokesperson said the pricing error had been corrected and that the app was again displaying accurate market data. The company added that it is still investigating the precise cause of the disruption.

Revolut also stated that the glitch affected only price displays and push notifications. Trading activity, user balances, and customer funds remained unaffected.

What Caused the Error

Revolut operates as a neobank rather than a dedicated crypto exchange. It depends on external providers for market data, liquidity, and order execution. When one of those providers experienced a disruption, incorrect data entered Revolut’s pricing and alert systems.

The specific provider involved has not been disclosed publicly. Revolut indicated it is still assessing what occurred.

Revolut’s own 24-hour price charts for other cryptocurrencies, including Ethereum and XRP, also showed sharp declines at the same time as the Bitcoin error.

Context: Revolut’s Recent Expansion

The incident occurred shortly after Revolut obtained its full UK banking license. The firm had applied in 2021, received a conditional license in July 2024, and gained full approval last month, enabling broader UK banking services including deposits.

Revolut is also seeking a US banking license and is reportedly aiming for a $200 billion valuation in an IPO, though that is not anticipated before 2028.

The company reported £3.1 billion in revenue in 2024 and processed over £1 trillion in transactions, operating in 140 countries.

Italian regulators fined Revolut €11 million in April for unfair commercial practices. Lithuania separately imposed a €3.5 million penalty related to anti-money laundering shortcomings.

Revolut stated that pricing has been restored and the issue is resolved.
