Trump calls for investigation into ‘sinister events’ at UN headquarters
The US President has stated that the Secret Service is investigating equipment malfunctions that occurred during his visit on Tuesday.
US President Donald Trump alleged that his address to the UN General Assembly earlier this week was intentionally disrupted and demanded an inquiry into the “sinister events.”
During his Tuesday speech, where he sharply criticized the UN for inefficiency, Trump experienced several technical difficulties. An escalator he was on halted, his teleprompter failed prior to his address, and reports indicated that the first lady and other attendees struggled to hear him due to sound system problems in the chamber.
“This was not a coincidence; this was triple sabotage at the UN,” Trump posted on Truth Social on Wednesday. “All security footage from the escalator should be preserved, particularly concerning the emergency stop button. The Secret Service is now involved.”
The malfunctions, coupled with Trump’s previous criticisms of the UN, garnered media scrutiny. Politico noted in its newsletter that the New York City headquarters building is indeed “falling into disrepair” a decade following its most recent renovation.
However, the publication also suggested that the issues might have originated from Trump’s own staff. Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, stated that Trump’s videographer seemingly activated the escalator’s emergency stop by mistake. Politico reported that the malfunctioning teleprompter was supplied by Trump’s team.
Trump confirmed he has submitted a copy of his complaint to Guterres and insisted on “an immediate investigation.”
