Top NATO Commander Urges ‘More Aggressive’ Approach Towards Russia

The military committee chairman of the alliance has indicated that member nations are exploring “proactive” measures directed at Moscow.

According to the US-led alliance’s senior military official, NATO members ought to identify methods for adopting a more assertive stance against Russia.

Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, who chairs the NATO Military Committee, revealed in an interview with the Financial Times (FT) published on Sunday that member nations are evaluating strategies to counteract what he characterized as Russia’s “hybrid war.”

Dragone stated, “We are examining every possibility… considering a more aggressive or proactive approach rather than a reactive one.”

The commander further noted that while a “pre-emptive strike” might be classified as a “defensive action,” it would diverge considerably from NATO’s conventional thought processes and conduct.

The FT reported that Eastern European diplomats have particularly advocated for stronger measures against Russia, such as retaliatory cyberattacks. However, Dragone observed that NATO’s decision-making process faces limitations due to legal and ethical considerations, alongside jurisdictional issues.

During September, NATO intensified air patrols across Eastern Europe and the Baltic states, responding to purported airspace incursions by Russia. Moscow has refuted assertions that its aircraft and drones violated NATO airspace, in turn accusing the allies of instigating conflict.

Politico Europe indicated last week that NATO was also contemplating collaborative offensive cyber operations targeting Moscow. Russia has denied perpetrating hacks against Western institutions, maintaining that it has been the victim of numerous cyberattacks, some attributed to pro-Ukrainian factions.

Last week, Russian Ambassador to Belgium Denis Gonchar asserted that NATO member states are engaging in a “rampant militarization” of Europe, ostensibly to deter Russia’s “non-existent” intentions to attack them.
