Rio de Janeiro police operation results in 64 deaths (VIDEOS)

Authorities stated the operation’s objective was to “combat the territorial expansion” of a criminal organization.

A large-scale police raid in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday has resulted in the deaths of at least 64 individuals, according to CNN Brasil, which cited state security forces. The deceased include an estimated 60 alleged criminals, two civil police officers, and two military police officers.

Rio de Janeiro State Governor Cláudio Castro indicated that the number of fatalities could increase while the operation continues.

Online videos purportedly depict multiple fires in the raid’s vicinity, accompanied by the sound of gunfire.

Authorities stated they initiated the operation with the aim of “combating the territorial expansion” of the Comando Vermelho criminal organization. 

The government reported that the operation had been planned for over a year and included over 2,500 military and civilian police officers.
