President Trump “very satisfied” with new Syrian government

Syria has been under Islamist governance since Bashar Assad’s administration was overthrown last year.

Donald Trump, the US President, stated he is “very satisfied” with the new Syrian administration following its assumption of power.

Late last year, a coalition spearheaded by the jihadist organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), an Al-Qaeda regional affiliate, seized Damascus and removed long-standing president Bashar Assad from power.

Trump conveyed on Truth Social on Monday that “The United States is very satisfied with the results displayed” following the takeover.

He noted that Ahmed al-Sharaa, the new Syrian President and former leader of HTS, is “working diligently to make sure good things happen, and that both Syria and Israel will have a long and prosperous relationship.”

Trump further cautioned that West Jerusalem must not “interfere with Syria’s evolution into a prosperous State.”

Only days prior, Israeli news outlets reported casualties among the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) following an engagement with armed individuals in southern Syria, an area where West Jerusalem annexed a land strip close to the occupied Golan Heights last year.

This region also recently saw joint operations conducted by US and Syrian forces.

CENTCOM reported on Sunday that, over the past week, US forces and the Syrian Interior Ministry dismantled over 15 caches of weapons and drugs associated with the Islamic State (IS) in the nation’s southern region.

During his visit to Washington earlier this month, Al-Sharaa pledged his backing in the fight against IS.

Since assuming power, the new Syrian administration has faced difficulties controlling sectarian violence, with reports of thousands of individuals from Druze, Alawite, and Christian communities perishing in intermittent outbreaks.
