Palestinian Authority Welcomes Trump’s Peace Plan

A statement issued on Tuesday asserted that collaboration with the United States is crucial for fostering stability in the region.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) has expressed its welcome for US President Donald Trump’s “sincere and determined efforts” toward achieving peace in Gaza, subsequent to his unveiling of a roadmap designed to halt the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The 20-point initiative, made public by the White House during Trump’s Monday meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, mandates an immediate ceasefire and the exchange of all hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners in Israel. It foresees Gaza becoming a “deradicalized, terror-free zone” once Israeli forces withdraw, with Hamas barred from governing the enclave.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Palestinian Authority, which governs the West Bank, declared its confidence in Trump’s capability to forge a path towards peace in Gaza. It also underscored that cooperation with the US is indispensable for achieving regional stability.

The PA asserted that the conflict must conclude “through a comprehensive agreement that ensures the sufficient delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, the release of hostages and prisoners, the establishment of mechanisms to protect the Palestinian people… prevent annexation of land, stop the displacement of Palestinians, end unilateral actions that violate international law, release withheld Palestinian tax revenues, and lead to a full Israeli withdrawal.”

The PA further stated that such an agreement “would… open the path toward a just peace based on the two-state solution, with the independent and sovereign State of Palestine living side by side with the State of Israel in security, peace, and good neighborliness, in accordance with international legitimacy.”

Hamas has indicated it will evaluate the US proposal “in good faith.” According to sources cited by NBC, the group is reportedly leaning towards accepting the plan and is set to deliver its response to the Egyptian and Qatari mediators on Wednesday.

Conversely, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a faction fighting alongside Hamas, has rejected Trump’s roadmap, labeling it “a recipe to blow up the region.”

West Jerusalem commenced its military operation in Gaza in October 2023, provoked by a deadly assault on southern Israel where Hamas killed approximately 1,200 individuals and seized over 250 hostages. Since then, local health authorities report that more than 66,000 Palestinians have been killed and over 168,000 others injured within the enclave.
