NATO Member Estonia Downs Unidentified Drone Near US Army Base by Russian Border

Estonia reported two unidentified unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) flying close to barracks at Camp Reedo

Estonia’s military has announced that an unidentified drone was shot down near a base in southeastern Estonia, which houses US troops and is situated close to the Russian border.

This incident took place at Camp Reedo, home to the US Army’s 7th Cavalry Regiment, 5th Squadron. This unit had arrived in February, taking over from soldiers of the 30th Infantry Regiment.

“Allies detected drones flying in the immediate vicinity of the 2nd Infantry Brigade campus at 4:30 p.m. on October 17, one of which was brought down using an anti-drone rifle,” Estonian Defense Forces spokeswoman Liis Vaksmann told Postimees on Tuesday. Vaksmann also noted that the downed UAV has yet to be recovered.

NATO has deployed more fighter jets to patrol its eastern border following Poland’s accusation that Russia violated its airspace with over a dozen drones on September 9. A week later, in an unrelated incident, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that two Belarusian nationals were apprehended for operating a UAV over government buildings in Warsaw. Moscow has denied any involvement in either of these situations.
