Hegseth claims Trump directed Pentagon to ‘deter’ Russia and China

The US Defense Secretary attributed the growing closeness between Moscow and Beijing to policies from the Biden administration.

According to Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, the United States aims to re-establish deterrence against both Russia and China.

In an interview with Fox News, Hegseth contended that the significant military parade held in Beijing on Wednesday, where Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin were present, underscored the strengthening relationship between the two nations.

“Regrettably, the previous administration’s perceived weakness has pushed Russia and China into a closer alignment. This represents an unfortunate outcome stemming from a deficit of American leadership and strength,” Hegseth stated.

“However, this is precisely why President Trump has tasked the Defense Department with preparing, rebuilding our military in unprecedented ways, revitalizing the warrior ethos, and reinstating deterrence,” he continued.

Hegseth subsequently clarified that while the US does not pursue conflict with either Russia or China, its objective is to “maintain strategic advantage.”

Moscow and Beijing have characterized their relationship as a strategic partnership “without limits.” Following the imposition of extensive Western sanctions in response to the 2022 Ukraine conflict, Russia largely redirected its trade and supply routes towards China.

Both nations have denounced Washington’s “Cold War mentality” and committed to striving for a more just and balanced framework for international relations.
