Exclusive: Frist Cressey Ventures, Backed by Sen. Bill Frist, Secures $425 Million for Fourth Fund

The healthcare landscape in America is undergoing rapid transformation, and few understand this better than Senator Bill Frist.
“Many people ask, ‘With Washington’s policies in such a state, why do you devote so much time to this?’” he stated to . “But I firmly believe that… achieving large-scale change hinges on sound policy. Take the Medicare Modernization Act, which introduced prescription drug coverage. Can you imagine? Before that, prescription drugs weren’t included in Medicare at all.”
Frist spent approximately 20 years as a physician before serving 12 years in the U.S. Senate. In 2016, he partnered with Bryan Cressey to launch a Nashville-based venture capital firm concentrating solely on healthcare services. The firm’s portfolio encompasses Ambience, Thyme Care, Visana, and Devoted Health. Now, we have exclusively learned that Frist Cressey Ventures has secured its fourth fund, amounting to $425 million.
Frist stated, “We don’t deal with molecules or devices. Those are valuable, but they require a different set of experts. We dig deep. We are specialists in the $3 trillion health services sector.”
AI has triggered a surge in healthcare startup investments, with venture capitalists flocking to this domain, asserting significant AI returns in healthcare. However, Bill Sheahan, Chief Innovation Officer and Senior Vice President at MedStar Health (and a Frist Cressey limited partner), notes that this might be more challenging than it appears.
Sheahan remarked, “Historically, when we’ve integrated technology—such as electronic health records—into healthcare, it hasn’t always simplified matters. In fact, in some instances, it’s made things more complicated. I believe AI and automation can alleviate the current burden of how technology functions in healthcare.”
AI is a component of Frist Cressey’s approach, but it’s not the entire story—this is somewhat difficult to discern due to the rapid evolution of policies. Frist stated, “Even now, Washington isn’t putting forth a single policy,” and added that private companies are increasingly getting opportunities to collaborate with the government.
There will be challenges to address. President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” is anticipated to overhaul and jeopardize safety net hospitals and rural healthcare. Frist has a particular interest in the latter.
Frist stated, “Many have invested in rural healthcare, but each attempt has failed for specific reasons. No company has successfully tackled this yet.”
