Delta Airlines Leverages Tom Brady’s Leadership Expertise to Train Workforce

(SeaPRwire) –   Corporate leaders seek inspiration from all corners, whether studying their peers’ wins or consulting seasoned industry experts for guidance. But Delta CEO Ed Bastian opted to build a close bond with seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady to shape the airline giant’s leadership strategy—and Brady’s insights are overhauling the company’s operating playbook.

“He’s an exceptional leader,” Bastian recently told ’s Editor-in-Chief Alyson Shontell during the 500: Titans and Disruptors of Industry podcast. “He has a brilliant mind. He consistently pushes boundaries and challenges the status quo.”

The head of the $42.2 billion company doesn’t want his operational philosophy to stay confined to an echo chamber. Bastian noted that after spending years in top leadership roles, many firms lose sight of how challenging it is to maintain their hard-won success. Too many teams fall into the habit of reusing the same strategies repeatedly to sustain their momentum, but the Delta CEO argues this is the wrong approach. True success, he says, comes from continuous adaptation and growth.

“The strategies that got you to the top won’t keep you there—you have to keep reinventing yourself, think creatively, take bold risks, and reexamine the very tactics that made you successful to drive even stronger performance,” Bastian added. “I can’t think of anyone, especially in the sports world, who has done that more consistently over a longer global career than Tom.”

The NFL legend is sharing his unique leadership approach with Delta’s over 100,000 employees through his “Tom Brady playbook.” Junior team members ask him questions about achieving success, navigating setbacks, and advancing their careers; he also features in a video series that Delta staff complete as part of the company’s official learning and development program.

Employees get to hear directly from Brady about his own career insights, and Bastian shared that he relies heavily on the Hall of Fame quarterback for guidance during the company’s transformation efforts.

“Instead of only hearing my perspective, bringing in diverse voices like Tom’s for our team discussions, leadership meetings, and for all 100,000 of our employees to hear—about what it takes to not just achieve greatness, but to maintain it—Tom is an incredible champion for that idea,” the CEO explained.

Tom Brady’s life after football in the corporate world

Brady first teamed up with Delta Air Lines in 2023, when the championship athlete—whose mother, appropriately enough, worked as a flight attendant—joined the Fortune 500 firm as a strategic advisor. Bastian shared that his team needed ongoing inspiration to keep rising through the industry’s ranks, and the five-time Super Bowl MVP was an ideal match.

“He’ll speak to our employees about what greatness looks like, along with resilience, excellence, and high performance,” Bastian told CNBC in 2023, shortly after announcing their partnership. “He’s played alongside some of the best teams in the world, and I believe we run the top team in the airline industry. Combining our two brands is going to create something truly special.”

Earlier in 2023, Brady hung up his cleats after a legendary 23-year career in the NFL, but he wasn’t ready to end his professional journey entirely. Since 2023, he has built a presence in the business world too: he’s taken partial ownership of brands including NoBull and CardVault, and has given speeches at major companies like Cisco and Cloudera. At Delta, he shared that he’s helping to motivate employees and build a strong, high-performing team.

“Continuing to take on work like this is really helping me grow as a person in so many ways during this new phase of my life,” Brady told CNBC while standing alongside Bastian in 2023. “I’m eager to share the many lessons I’ve picked up over my career.”

The football legend believes that strong, successful teamwork “always begins at the leadership level”; leaders should inspire their teams to maximize their opportunities and unlock their full potential. Even after decades performing at the highest level of his sport, Brady says he’s not exempt from criticism—and he actively welcomes it. He notes that resting on his past reputation would be “the worst thing to do.” Throughout his NFL career and his current role as Delta’s strategic advisor, he still values receiving coaching to sustain his ongoing success.

“I’ve always seen myself as just one of the teammates,” Brady told Bastian during a 2024 episode of Delta’s Gaining Altitude podcast. “Some of these employees are brand new to the company, but I wanted them to treat me like it was my first day on the job, too.”

Success didn’t come quickly for Brady in the early years of his football career, and he learned valuable lessons from his setbacks. He began his journey as a benched, second-string quarterback on his California high school team, which failed to win a single game that season. While he later became the starting quarterback at the University of Michigan, he was selected 199th overall in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft. Despite these hurdles, he persisted and became one of the greatest athletes of all time. Building resilience through failure is critical to success in any field, whether sports or business.

“The core of any business or career is overcoming adversity,” Brady told Shontell at the 2024 Global Forum. “The only way to build that skill is to experience failure, and the only way to fail is to put yourself in uncomfortable positions.”

“When you fail, then work with your team to find a solution to move past that setback, you’ll build significant self-confidence—and that confidence will give you a better shot at succeeding in your next opportunity.”
