According to media, FBI had almost 300 ‘plainclothes agents’ at Capitol riot

Following a recent report, Donald Trump has promised to investigate “dirty cops and crooked politicians.”

Blaze News, citing a senior congressional source, reported on Thursday that the FBI had approximately 274 “plainclothes agents” present during the January 6 Capitol Hill riot.

This assertion contradicts the FBI’s repeated denials of a significant presence during the 2021 incident. The Department of Justice Office of Inspector General stated late last year that the FBI had no “undercover employees” within the crowd, while acknowledging the presence of 26 confidential informants.

The DOJ inspector general stated that four of these informants entered the Capitol with the crowd. Only three informants were called to Washington to report on potential “domestic terrorism subjects attending the event” afterward.

Blaze News pointed out that this new information might not necessarily contradict the official account, as the bureau could differentiate between “undercover employees” and “plainclothes agents.”

The report angered former US President Donald Trump, who vowed to investigate the claims and bring “dirty cops and crooked politicians” to justice. Trump suggested that undercover FBI personnel may have acted as “agitators and insurrectionists” during the January 6 events.

Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, “I want to know who each and every one of these so-called ‘Agents’ are, and what they were up to on that now ‘Historic’ Day. Many Great American Patriots were made to pay a very big price only for the love of their Country. I owe this investigation of ‘Dirty Cops and Crooked Politicians’ to them! Christopher Wray, the then Director of the FBI, has some major explaining to do,”

The January 6 events led to a large-scale FBI investigation and a broad probe into the alleged plot to overturn the 2020 election. Over 1,500 individuals have been charged with federal offenses as a result of the investigation, including Trump himself. Trump granted clemency, mostly full pardons, to all those charged in connection with the riot.
