On Monday, March 2, 2026, the collaboration was officially revealed.
Amazon Leo is set to supply the backhaul links required to connect Vodafone’s isolated base stations to its primary telecommunications network.

With download speeds of 1 Gbps and upload speeds of 400 Mbps, the satellite service offers high-speed performance.
This approach bypasses the requirement for laying fiber cables or setting up fixed wireless connections in regions where such infrastructure is too expensive or slow to implement.
According to Vodafone, the partnership facilitates more affordable and efficient mobile coverage deployment in currently underserved locations.
European Rollout Starting in 2026
Initial implementation will see Vodafone utilizing Leo to link base stations in Germany, with further expansion into other European nations later in 2026.
Both firms anticipate that the first isolated mobile sites will be operational within the year.
Subsequently, the initiative will extend to Africa through Vodafone’s subsidiary, Vodacom.
Vodacom serves various African territories where establishing rural and remote connectivity remains a significant hurdle.
At present, Amazon Leo maintains a constellation of over 200 satellites.
Hundreds of additional satellites are already manufactured and awaiting launch to grow the network.
Vodafone’s Broader Satellite Plans
Additionally, Vodafone is working on a different satellite initiative alongside AST SpaceMobile.
That particular project aims to deliver satellite signals directly to consumer smartphones rather than focusing on network towers.
A specific launch timeline for the AST SpaceMobile service has not been established by Vodafone.
The partnership with Amazon Leo is separate, concentrating on infrastructure backhaul instead of direct-to-handset connectivity.
Vodafone noted that the African rollout of Amazon Leo via Vodacom will occur in stages, growing alongside the expansion of Amazon’s satellite constellation.
