Shanghai Manual Unveils Case Base to Boost Global Urban Sustainable Development Knowledge Sharing

SHANGHAI, Nov. 12, 2025 – A new case base for the Shanghai Manual was recently launched. This initiative, designed to broaden the manual’s case sources and enhance its content, commenced at an event jointly hosted by UN-Habitat and the Shanghai Municipal Housing and Urban-Rural Development Commission, and organized by the Shanghai Coordination Center of World Cities Day.

The Shanghai Manual, officially known as ‘Shanghai Manual: A Guide for Sustainable Urban Development in the 21st Century,’ is a continually updated international publication collaboratively edited by UN-Habitat, the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government.

Originating from the best practices showcased at Expo 2010 Shanghai China, the manual functions as a crucial knowledge resource. It compiles and shares exemplary practical cases from global cities across economic, social, environmental, and other facets of sustainable development, providing practical insights and policy guidance to urban planners and professionals globally.

The gathering convened essential participants, such as the domestic and international editorial teams of the Shanghai Manual, representatives from various cities and their administrative bodies, publishing organizations, and reader delegates.

Participants engaged in thorough discussions concerning key priorities, including the advancement of case base development, enhancing the reference utility of cases, broadening diverse avenues for case acquisition, anticipating future growth trajectories, and presenting the most recent sustainable development practices from participating cities. These conversations aimed to strengthen global agreement, foster knowledge exchange, forge cooperative partnerships, and expedite the realization of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

A further significant announcement at the event was the creation of the Shanghai Manual Global Case City Network, envisioned as a platform to boost cooperation among cities dedicated to sustainable development.
