NRC License Enables Entry Into Isotope Processing Market

Oklo, through its subsidiary Atomic Alchemy, has obtained its inaugural materials license from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. This authorization permits the company to handle, process, and distribute key radioactive isotopes, positioning it for early-stage commercial isotope operations.

The license specifically allows for activities involving limited quantities of radium-226 and sealed calibration sources. It also covers chemical processing, storage, and repackaging under strict regulatory conditions, enabling Oklo to commence structured isotope recovery and preparation.

The Idaho Radiochemistry Laboratory will be the primary site for these initial operations, managing distribution to authorized recipients in compliance with federal regulations. This development establishes a controlled framework for domestic isotope supply.

Commercial Isotope Supply Chain Development Gains Momentum

Oklo’s strategy involves converting disused radioactive materials into feedstock for medical isotope production, aiming to alleviate supply shortages in healthcare and research and reduce dependence on foreign sources.

The recovered materials are intended for applications such as targeted alpha therapy and industrial testing, while also promoting resource efficiency by repurposing materials classified as waste. This approach aligns with broader objectives for nuclear sustainability.

Experience gained from operations at the Idaho laboratory will inform the development of future large-scale facilities. Oklo has plans for a multi-reactor isotope foundry equipped with several small reactors designed to support a range of applications, including those in the medical, defense, and space sectors.

DOE Agreements Advance Aurora Reactor Deployment

In parallel, Oklo has entered into an agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy to support its initial reactor project. This agreement outlines the framework for design, construction, and operation under a federal pilot program, which is expected to expedite the deployment of advanced nuclear systems.

The Department of Energy has approved a Nuclear Safety Design Agreement for the Aurora reactor at the Idaho National Laboratory, signaling the commencement of the next phase of technical review and project execution, including further safety analysis under federal supervision.

Oklo is also concurrently developing its fuel fabrication facility in Idaho, which will be responsible for producing the initial fuel assemblies for the Aurora reactor. These combined efforts are set to enhance domestic nuclear capabilities and support long-term commercial licensing objectives.
