Netflix Purchases Ben Affleck’s AI Film Technology Company InterPositive

TLDR

  • Netflix has purchased InterPositive, an AI filmmaking tools company established by Ben Affleck in 2022.
  • The financial details of the transaction were not revealed.
  • InterPositive develops AI tools aimed at addressing production issues such as missing shots and improper lighting.
  • Following the acquisition, Affleck will take on a role as a senior advisor at Netflix.
  • This represents Netflix’s first acquisition since it withdrew from the competition to purchase Warner Bros Discovery’s assets.

Netflix discreetly executed a move this week that merges Hollywood celebrity influence with artificial intelligence. The streaming leader announced on Thursday its acquisition of InterPositive, an AI filmmaking technology firm co-founded by Oscar-winning director and actor Ben Affleck.

The monetary terms of the agreement were not made public.

Affleck founded InterPositive in 2022. The company creates AI-powered tools specifically tailored for film production processes.

The central technology focuses on an AI model educated to comprehend visual logic and editorial consistency. It operates within the practical constraints of filmmaking — addressing problems like missing shots, incorrect lighting, and continuity errors.

“We also incorporated safeguards to protect creative intent, meaning the tools are built for responsible experimentation while leaving creative choices in the hands of artists,” Affleck stated.

Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria reinforced that perspective. “We are of the belief that new tools should enhance creative liberty, not limit it or supplant the work of writers, directors, actors, and crews,” she remarked.

Affleck, most renowned in the director’s seat for the Oscar-winning film *Argo*, will now assume a new position as a senior advisor at Netflix.

Netflix’s First Acquisition in Some Time

This transaction marks Netflix’s first acquisition since the company retreated from a competitive attempt to buy Warner Bros Discovery’s studio and streaming properties. That contest was finally secured by a competing proposal from Paramount Skydance, which was considered superior.

The purchase indicates Netflix is pushing further into AI-supported production infrastructure instead of buying conventional content libraries or studios.

Hollywood’s Shifting Stance on AI

The entertainment sector’s relationship with AI has evolved rapidly. Recently, concerns about job loss and intellectual property rights were predominant in Hollywood discussions — and were central to the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes.

Currently, studios are shifting their approach.

Near the end of last year, Disney revealed intentions to permit the use of characters from its Star Wars, Pixar, and Marvel franchises within the startup’s Sora AI video generator.

Netflix’s purchase of InterPositive adheres to a similar rationale — employing AI as a practical tool for production rather than as a substitute for creativity.

InterPositive’s tools are constructed with specific controls. The AI is engineered to adhere to cinematic principles while adjusting to the unpredictable nature of on-set filming, ensuring human creators retain authority over final choices.

Affleck’s participation continues beyond the sale. His transition to a senior advisor role at Netflix maintains his connection to the technology’s future development within one of the globe’s largest streaming services.

Netflix stock rose 0.17% on Thursday.
