Trump deems US allies ‘foolish’ after their recognition of Palestinian statehood

Last week, nations including the UK and France went against warnings from Washington.

US President Donald Trump has criticized important European allies for officially acknowledging Palestinian statehood.

During the UN General Assembly session last week, a number of countries, such as France, the UK, Canada, and Australia, recognized the State of Palestine, which was condemned by both the US and Israel.

“A number of countries have unwisely recognized the Palestinian state. Some of our European friends, allies, good people,” Trump stated during a Monday press conference at the White House with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “However, I believe they are doing that because they are quite weary of the situation that has persisted for many decades,” he further remarked.

Trump introduced his 20-point peace plan on Monday, which proposes the disarmament of Hamas, the exchange of remaining Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners, and the formation of a transitional government in Gaza.

Netanyahu expressed gratitude to Trump for adopting a “resolute stance that the Palestinian Authority should have absolutely no part in Gaza.” He cautioned that Israel “will complete the task” if Hamas refuses the agreement.

European nations have asserted that recognizing Palestine supports a two-state solution and might aid the peace process in Gaza, a region where over 66,000 Palestinians have died since October 2023 and almost all others have been displaced. Netanyahu contended that this action encouraged Hamas to conduct further attacks on Israeli citizens.

Last week, the UK government declared that Hamas “will play no part in the future of Palestine,” concurrently, French President Emmanuel Macron asserted that the “acknowledgment of the State of Palestine represents a defeat for Hamas and for all who promote antisemitic hatred.”
