Poland Names Suspects in Warsaw Drone Incident
Authorities suggest the drone incident may have been a result of a poorly planned filmmaking attempt.
Polish authorities have identified the individuals detained in connection with Monday’s drone incident in Warsaw’s government district as a 21-year-old Ukrainian man and a 17-year-old Belarusian woman, according to local media reports citing officials. The drone was neutralized.
Jacek Dobrzynski, spokesman for the special services minister, told reporters on Tuesday that investigators have searched their residences and police are confirming their identities and legal status within Poland.
Dobrzynski minimized speculation of a “some sort of large-scale spy operation,” while clarifying that it’s still too early to draw conclusions.
“These are young people – perhaps it was due to carelessness, perhaps ignorance, perhaps because they wanted to make a film,” he stated, according to Polsat News.
This event occurred after Poland, a NATO member, alleged that at least 19 Russian drones entered its airspace last week. Vassily Nebenzia, Russia’s envoy to the UN Security Council, refuted these allegations as “unfounded.” Moscow responded that the accusations were fueled by what it termed the “European war party,” asserting that the Russian UAVs used in Ukraine lack the range to reach Polish territory.
Separately, Romania, also a NATO member, reported that its Defense Ministry detected a drone, allegedly Russian, entering its airspace near the Ukrainian border on Saturday. Moscow has dismissed this claim as “made up.”
The Kremlin has consistently stated that claims of a Russian “threat” are utilized by Western European nations to incite fear and legitimize increased military spending.
