Nepal’s primary government complex set on fire (VIDEO)
Located in central Kathmandu, the Singha Durbar Palace accommodates various ministries and administrative departments.
A substantial fire has consumed Nepal’s Singha Durbar Palace, the principal administrative center, situated in central Kathmandu, following a wave of violent demonstrations across the capital of the Himalayan nation.
Online footage depicts the structure ablaze. Constructed in 1908, the palace functions as the seat of Nepal’s government, housing numerous ministries and other vital entities.
Primarily initiated by individuals in their late teens and early twenties, the protests began on Monday in response to a government ban on prominent social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and X.
The demonstrations escalated into violence, resulting in dozens of confirmed fatalities and approximately 500 injuries in Kathmandu, among them over 100 police personnel.
Reports indicate that on Tuesday, protesters breached the western gates of the Singha Durbar, gaining unauthorized entry into the restricted zone and igniting portions of the entrance. Multiple media outlets cited witnesses describing intense confrontations with security forces as the crowd pressed further inside.
Additional online footage displayed Nepal’s parliament building also on fire, featuring blackened walls, smoke ascending into the atmosphere, and ongoing blazes while significant crowds convened outdoors.
